Don Graves by Patricia Gallinger-Giao
“The greatest wastes are unused talents and
untried ideas.” Author unknown
There’s a light and energy in Don’s studio as he shows me his
latest work. It’s colourful chaos, a kaleidoscope of paint tubes,
palette knives, brushes, paint splotched counters and dozens of
canvases at various stages of completion— deep blues, subtle
browns, verdant greens, muted skillfully as the hues play across
the panels. We talk a bit about mediums and technique. He’s
gearing up to take some of his work to the Distillery District Art
Show in Toronto. He’s a landscape man, that’s clear and I’m
curious about how a music conductor comes to paint and why,
so we sit down and he begins to tell me…
